It goes without saying that I can't boot from it when the UEFI is in UEFI mode. grrrr ) Running the latest firmware 4.0.When UEFI/(Motherboard Firmware), is set to UEFI(not legacy), USB is not detected Am I missing a config setting in the control panel or something? (why the NAS corrupted is another thread for another forum, but that really ruined my weekend, and thank god for backups. I'm still befuddled why I can't get the rear USB 3.0 port to recognize the drive after a factory reset though. I'm in the process of restoring the data now.

Oddly, when I connect the G-Drive to the front of the NAS (the front port is set to recognize inputs as an external drive), it works fine. Not even the blue USB light on the front lights up - it's like the drive doesn't exist.

HOWEVER, now when I plug the external drive into the rear USB 3.0 port, the NAS won't recognize it. I restored the QNAP to factory settings, rebuilt the array, and figured I would just restore the data back to the NAS from the external drive. Fortunately when I plugged my G-Drive into my Mac it looked like the backup had at least finished. This morning I awoke and my RAID array had corrupted - QNAP admin console said the RAID array was now "not active" and I couldn't restore the array either (tried all the tricks to no avail here as a last resort too - ). This is probably NOT fixable through a QNAP firmware update simply because it's so complicated and not really Linux based. But it can be updated, as long as you can manage to run a firmware update utility on Windows XP that's actually running on your NAS (from a USB disk). Basically, the USB3.0 controller firmware is buggy / obsolete. WARNING: only for very advanced users, could destroy all your data, etc., etc., I disclaim all responsible for anything. I figured how to fix this problem on my TS-1079.
